This is a collection of four short stories following Tobias, otherwise known as ‘Four’. He may not be the main character in the main books of the series, but he is very important to the story, because without him Tris’s story wouldn’t have happened the way it did. The stories follow Tobias in the events that lead up to him meeting Tris, and how it affected the choices that he made. I really enjoyed reading things from his perspective, as it adds a new dimension to the whole story, and it makes a change to see someone other than a main character take centre stage.

In the future, the world is ruined, and a new way of running things will determine who you are and your place in the world. Society is divided into factions, and your place in one of these is decided by a test at the age of 16.

Beatrice has never felt like she fits into her parents faction, but little does she now that she doesn’t really fit into any of them. Her test was inconclusive, making her a ‘Divergent’, something that she must keep to herself, for they are feared. She choses to be a soldier, and must complete their initiation or become factionless. Only her faction is forced into attacking her parents faction, and her being a Divergent is the only thing that stops her succumbing to a mind controlling serum and doing so.

Beatrice is forced to make a stand, but what will the cost be?
