This book is the prequel in a series called The Old Kingdom.
So this book is set way before the first book, before any of the characters we’ve already met have been born. Well almost, the truth is that there are two people we have already met. I think you may be able to guess one of them if you have read the other books in the series, but the second is harder to figure out until the very final twist.
It follows the journey of Clariel, a relation of both the Abhorsen and the King, who is forced to follow her parents to the capitol. She hates it there, and she hates the people even more. But as she plans to leave at the earliest opportunity and return to the forest she calls her real home, the rest of the world seems to have different plans for her. But Clariel is not a person to be pushed.
