This book takes place eight years after Graceling, and tells the story of Bitterblue, the young Princess that Lady Kasta rescued from the clutches of Leck.

Now sitting on the throne as Queen, she is lost at how to heal the wounds her father inflicted. Her advisors tell her that she should pardon those who carried out her father’s brutal orders and try to forget the past, but her heart tells her differently.

After sneaking out of the castle to escape the prison like conditions being a young Queen places on her, she sees the truth of her capitol city rather than the more pleasant version her advisors would have her believe. There she meets two thieves, who have a Robin Hood style motivation for what they do, in that they only steal what has already been stolen during Leck’s reign.

Bitterblue uncovers the painful truths of her father’s reign, truths that will heal her kingdom far better than simply trying to forget what happened, and also manages to find love in the process.

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Edmund Burke.
